Position Information
TxDOT’s Lubbock District is looking to hire a Bridge Engineer Supervisor. This Bridge Engineer Supervisor will work with Lubbock District and Bridge Division staff to create in-house plans to repair and preserve bridges, provide field construction support, train district employees to perform in-house repairs, implement research and respond to bridge emergencies. You will supervisor a specialized team of bridge repair operators, bridge inspection specialists, EIT’s and engineering interns. You will have the opportunity to apply your engineering skills to solve complex problems as you are a part of the TxDOT team to rehabilitate and preserve our inventory of over 57,000 bridges statewide.

Position Description
Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and/or contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties:
- Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data, analyzes data and provides summaries.
- Assists in the development, preparation and letting of maintenance contracts for the district.
- Coordinates fracture critical, underwater or off-system bridge inspection programs.
- Designs, sketches and recommends bridge repair procedures.
- Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired and/or closed to the traveling public.
- Oversees and performs bridge structural evaluations/analyses of structures; inspects bridges that have appraisal and
- condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
- Performs critical inspections on large or unusual structures when requested by the Bridge Division or in response to an
- emergency.
- Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
- Recommends replacement/rehabilitation/repair of damaged bridges and coordinates with local officials on critical findings
- involving structures, not under state jurisdiction, to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related science bachelor’s or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience:
- 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
- Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
- For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector’s Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.
- Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must
- (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license
- from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of
- employment.
- This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not
- authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee
- in this position.
- Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Climbing – ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
